Internships

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) takes great interest in helping young women gain skills compatible with their studies in science technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Our program allows women seeking careers in STEM to explore and develop expertise that can be applied across all disciplines.

Alumni of the AWIS Internship Program can be found working in industry, academia, and for the government in a broad array of positions including research, public policy, communications, and project management.

Program Description

AWIS interns are invaluable to the organization. Working directly with staff and volunteer leadership, interns help fulfill the mission of AWIS by contributing to the national office operations.

Our highly competitive program provides bright, innovative students with valuable knowledge and professional skills through mentorship and independent learning.   An intern's tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Develop content for AWIS web site and social networking platforms
Act as an AWIS liaison at Capitol Hill briefings and partner organization meetings
Interact with board members as well as top STEM professionals
Perform special projects affiliated with AWIS committees
Research and apply for grants and other funding opportunities
Draft materials for publications including AWIS in Action and AWIS Magazine

In addition to their day-to-day assignments, each intern will have ownership for a project.  The parameters of the project are determined by AWIS staff in consultation with the intern and are developed on the basis of the immediate needs of the organization and the interests and abilities of the intern.

Program Details

Today we offer competitive internships during the fall and spring semesters and a ten-week summer program.   Interns typically work a 40-hour work week and receive a stipend of $10 an hour.  Due to the high cost of housing in Washington DC, we do not currently offer this benefit to interns.
