2009 Awards

Several of the awards are named to honor the achievements of women scientists. Click here for brief biographical paragraphs on these women.

If you have any questions, send them by email to awisedfd@awis.org.   Include your phone number.

Who May Apply?

In general,

1)  female graduate students enrolled in a life or physical science or engineering program leading to a Ph.D. degree, and

2)  female undergraduates in their first, second, or third year of college who expect to major in science or a related field.

See the detailed list in the application instructions to confirm eligibility of your field. All predoctoral applicants (except those applying for the Satter award)  must have passed their department's qualifying exam and expect to complete their degree by August 2011. (Satter award applicants may apply at any time in their Ph.D program.)  Previous applicants to this program may not reapply. Eligibility criteria are subject to change.

Evaluation Criteria

Reviewers consider academic achievement, the importance of the research question addressed, quality of the research, reference letters, and the applicant's potential for future contributions to science  and related fields (e.g., engineering or mathematics). For some awards, such as the Lorentzen,  reviewers also evaluate non-academic activities.  Overall, the AWIS Awards program is quite competitive, with about 10% of applicants receiving awards.

How may the award be used?

The award may be used for any aspect of education, including tuition, books, housing, research, travel, meeting registration, and publication costs.

Application Forms and Deadlines

The application consists of a summary form, a six-page research plan (pre-doc) or a three-page essay (undergraduate), a resume form, two recommendation letters (three for Lorentzen Award), transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework, and a brief biographical paragraph.

All applications must  be at the AWIS office by the following deadlines:

January 23, 2009 for undergraduates;

January 30, 2009 for predocs.
