Applications are invited for an outstanding astrophysicist to join the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at its Observatory based in Hilo, HI.  The successful candidate will direct the operations of the SMA to ensure that planned scientific observations and engineering tests are carried out efficiently.   In addition, the incumbent will provide administrative, technical, and scientific guidance to Hilo-based SMA staff.  As an internationally-recognized authority in millimeter or submillimeter radio astronomy, the incumbent will also conduct his or her own program of research in submillimeter observational astronomy and support development of enhanced capabilities for the SMA. 

Requirements:

* Mastery of the concepts, principles and practices of astronomy, astrophysics or physics as evidenced by an advanced degree in astrophysics, physics, or engineering and/or comparable experience.

* Extensive knowledge of millimeter and submillimeter wavelength astronomy.

* Knowledge of aperture syntheses and spectroscopy.

* Managerial experience providing guidance, leadership, direction, and oversight to staff.

* Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to function with others in a research environment.

* Knowledge of state-of-the-art astronomical instrumentation

* Scholarly competence necessary to formulate, conduct, and present the results of programs of advanced research.
