Educational Foundation

Each year, the AWIS Educational Foundation offers predoctoral awards and college scholarships for high school seniors in the amount of $1,000. A new program, the Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award, is for college sophomores or juniors studying physics or geoscience. Information about these awards appears below, with links to the instructions and application forms.

Several of the awards, given annually or every other year, are named to honor the achievements of women scientists. Click here for brief biographical paragraphs on these women.

If you have a question, send it by email to Dr. Barbara Filner, president of the Educational Foundation, at awisedfd@awis.org.

2008 Predoctoral Awards

About 5-10 AWIS graduate fellowships in the amount of $1,000 are awarded each year. The four memorial awards are: (1) Joan Wright Goodman Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the life or physical sciences, (2) Luise Meyer-Schutzmeister Award, for an outstanding graduate student in physics (see note below, (3) Amy Lutz Rechel Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of plant biology, (4) the Diane H. Russell Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of biochemistry or pharmacology, (5) Ruth Satter Award, for an outstanding graduate student who interrupted her education for at least three years to raise a family. AWIS may also award Citations of Merit ($300).

NOTE: For predoctoral fellowship applicants in the field of physics, do not use the links below for application forms. The Schutzmeister award competition is managed by Dr. Gerald Hardie at Western Michigan University. To request application forms contact him at gerald.hardie@wmich.edu. (This does not apply to the college scholarship or Lorentzen award applicants in the field of physics.)

Who May Apply?

In general, female students enrolled in a behavioral, life, physical, or social science or engineering program leading to a Ph.D. degree may apply. See the detailed list in the application instructions to confirm eligibility of your field. All applicants except those for the Satter award must have passed their department's qualifying exam and expect to complete their degree by June 2010. (Satter award applicants may apply at any time in their Ph.D program, including the first year.) Non-U.S. citizens must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at a university in the United States. Previous applicants to this program may not reapply. Eligibility criteria are subject to change.

Evaluation Criteria

Reviewers consider academic achievement, the importance of the research question addressed, the quality of the research, and the applicant's potential for future contributions to science or engineering. The program is quite competitive, with about 100 applicants last year.

How may the award be used?

The award may be used for any aspect of education, including tuition, books, housing, research, travel and meeting registration, or publication costs, for example.
