Volunteering for AWIS: A Win-Win Situation
National AWIS offers numerous opportunities for members to volunteer, a win-win situation, as do chapters.
Members
- Acquire new expertise
- Enrich their careers
- Expand their circle of friends
- Help others
AWIS
- Benefits from members' hard-won expertise
- Becomes more effective
- Does more
- Reaches more women in science
Volunteering on a national committee also is a good way to become more involved in the governance of AWIS and move toward election to the Executive Board. If you'd like to do something with your chapter, contact the chapter directly.
Review for the AWIS Educational Foundation
We need reviewers for the fellowship programs of the Educational Foundation. Generally we recruit faculty members for the graduate fellowships, but we use graduate students, school teachers, and others for the college scholarship program, to which high school seniors apply. If interested, contact Barbara Filner, the Foundation president, at awisedfd@awis.org.
Serve on an AWIS Committee
Several committees would love to involve more members. Contact the AWIS national
office to volunteer-send an email to the AWIS
President. If you are not sure what you would
like to do-but want to do something-let us know
a little about you and we'll offer some suggestions.
Write for the AWIS Magazine
Would you like to write about a specific topic, do a regular (or irregular) column on women in science activities, including local chapters of AWIS? Contact Nicole Kresge , our editor.
Volunteer to Run for a Councilor Position
Members active in local chapters as well as unaffiliated members have an important perspective to bring to the deliberations of the AWIS Executive Board, which meets 2-3 times each year. If you are interested, or would like more information, contact Phoebe Leboy , President-elect and Chair of the Nomination Committee.
