Application Process

Each application includes the following parts:

  •  A multi-page Application Form
  • Submission of two transcripts
  • Recommendations submitted by appropriate individuals you know (2 or 3, depending on the type of application)
  • The Filner and Satter Awards each require one additional document.  Please click here for more information.

Recommended Steps for the Application Process

  • Review this website, including the types of awards and the qualifications for each. Determine if you qualify and for which award you would apply. You may apply for only one award. Applicants who apply for the Satter or Filner Award will also be automatically considered for a general pre-doctoral award.
  • Download and review a copy of the application form.
  • Obtain your transcripts. You will need to submit your current and most-recent previous transcript. We recommend you order these from the appropriate registrar’s office, sent to yourself. If they can provide the transcript as an electronic (pdf) file, obtain that file. If not, order a paper copy. Click here for information on converting to a pdf file. It can take several weeks to receive a transcript. We recommend you order your transcripts as soon as you decide to apply.
  • Select your references. References should be able to speak specifically to why you are the person who should receive an award. Make sure your references have plenty of time to write their comments and that they commit to submitting their recommendation by the January deadline.   Click here to download an instruction and information sheet to give to your references. It is useful to provide your references with a resume to remind them of your accomplishments. Also, ask them to submit their reference material by early December and to notify you when they've done so.
  • Allow a suitable period to complete your application form.   Complete the form and carefully proofread to make sure it is complete and correct.  Convert your application to a pdf file. Click here for information on converting to a pdf file.
  • When you have your files ready proceed to the submission webpage by clicking on the award name on the undergraduate or predoctoral page to complete your information, attach your files, and submit the application.   You will receive a confirmatory e-mail.
  • Follow up with your references in early December to confirm that they have submitted their ranking form and letter of recommendation. If they haven’t, ask them to do so in the next week or two, and keep checking. We regret that we do not have the ability to notify you when your references have submitted their documents. In past years, many applicants were automatically disqualified because we had not received the required information from a reference by the deadline. Don’t let this happen to you.
  • Award recipients will receive notification by the end of July.

Evaluation Criteria

Reviewers for all awards consider academic achievement, and potential for a successful career in science. Some of the awards have additional criteria which are discussed on the undergraduate and predoctoral information pages.

How may the award be used?

The award may be used for any aspect of education, including tuition, books, housing, or travel, for example.

 Award Announcement

Award recipients will be notified by email by the end of July.  The information is publically available in September via a link on the Educational Awards Committee homepage.  Awards also are announced in the fall issue of the AWIS Magazine.
