AWIS Educational Awards Committee
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Educational Committee offers awards to help women complete their education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Established by AWIS in 1974, the awards program obtains funds from contributions from members and other donors. The inaugural donation was provided by then-AWIS president Dr. Estelle Ramey, who contributed some of her speaking fees. The first awards were made in April 1975 - three $500-graduate awards.
Given that AWIS is a 501(c)3 organization, contributions are tax deductible. All contributions to the Educational Awards Committee are used exclusively to fund awards. Over the past 35 years the endowment has grown with contributions from members, sponsors, colleagues, friends, and family. About 25 awards are made annually, totaling $15,000-20,000.
Awards are available to female undergraduate and predoctoral students. To be eligible, students generally must be:
- Enrolled in a degree program in one of the STEM fields
- Either an American citizen or attending a college/university in the United States
- Planning a science-based career including research or teaching
- Applying for an AWIS award for the first time

The application process for 2009 awards is now closed. The information for the 2010 awards will be on-line by mid-September, 2009.
