Dual Career Solutions: Successful Recruitment and Retention Strategies – Equitable Solutions Series

Presenter: Angela McNerney, President, Tech Valley Connect, Inc.

The cost of losing a professional hire within the first 2 years is conservatively estimated at 2 1/2 times the salary. Very often this loss is related to dual career (trailing spouse) challenges and an inability for families to assimilate in their new community. Solutions can be structured that involve regional employers and services to meet the needs of the spouse/partner in transition.

Who Should Attend: Department Heads, Academic and Corporate Leaders, Hiring Managers, Deans, Policy Advocates

About the Presenter: Angela McNerney serves as the President & CEO of Tech Valley Connect. She developed the independent, not-for-profit Tech Valley Connect program from its inception as a pilot program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At Rensselaer she served as program director for an NSF ADVANCE and Elsevier Foundation grant to pilot an innovative program focused on improving retention and facilitating career advancement of women faculty.

Focused on dual career couples and relocation challenges associated with hiring faculty, Angela expanded the concept to local businesses, creating Tech Valley Connect, a non-profit organization that delivers a suite of robust spousal employment, family integration, and cultural transition services to meet customized needs of partners. Since its inception in 2010, Tech Valley Connect has acquired 65 members, 18 sponsors, 41 resources, and 142 families into the system. By remaining current on industry trends and local needs, she is constantly assessing additional services and tools to offer cutting-edge solutions that achieve organizational goals and member success.

Angela McNerney has a BA in Public Communications from the College of St. Rose. Her background includes Public Relations and Freelance writing.
