Profiles of AWIS Members in Statistics: Haema Nilakanta

During Fall 2011 I had the great opportunity to be an intern with the Association for Women in Science. At that time, as a recent graduate and mathematics major from Iowa State University, I assisted AWIS with the statistical analysis of its membership data.  I also analyzed data collected by a previous intern about the presence of women in STEM within the U.S. government and ran analyses on data from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Labor concerning women in STEM.  Moreover, I used data visualization techniques and infographics to make the results more interactive and useful for AWIS’s advocacy efforts.

One of the most rewarding parts of my internship was networking with leading women in STEM fields. In fact, with access to AWIS’s extensive network, I was able to meet a director of a research center who connected me with my current boss and PI, helping me earn my first full time research position. Not only did my internship help me secure employment, but it also taught me how to navigate towards a successful career in the sciences and understand how current workforce policies affect women.

Haema is currently a Research Assistant on the Lung HIV Microbiome Project at The George Washington University’s Biostatistics Center. She is also working on her M.S. in Biostatistics at GWU and plans to pursue a PhD in Statistics thereafter.
