WHY JOIN
YOUR LOCAL CHAPTER/AFFILIATE GROUP?

As an interdisciplinary organization, AWIS offers a rare opportunity for women in
STEM to meet professionals from other fields. Women in STEM are frequently isolated
from each other in their working environments. By joining an AWIS chapter or affiliate
group, such women will experience the rapport and camaraderie born of shared
activities and mutual respect.

10 Reasons to Join a Chapter/Affiliate Group

  1. Expand your network by attending local events.  AWIS chapters/affiliate groups offer a variety of events topical sessions to informal meetups, they’ve got it all.

  2. Find a mentor, friend, advisor, or a new contact.  Over 50% of AWIS chapters/affiliate groups have formal mentoring programs.  Find out how you can get involved.

  3. Hear about what is going on outside of your scientific discipline.  AWIS has members across all employment sectors and STEM fields.  Expand your horizons and connect with women outside of your field of expertise.

  4. Participate in forums discussing topics relevant to women in science (e.g., balancing work and family life, maternity leave, harassment and discrimination, and women's perspectives on science and science-related issues).

  5. Develop leadership skills outside your regular job.  Volunteering at the chapter level, can provide you with leadership skills that you won’t get on the job.

  6. Raise problems and receive suggestions in a non-threatening environment.  AWIS members are supportive and helpful.

  7. Meet women in your local area in influential positions.  We have women at all levels across all disciplines who are ready to help you succeed.

  8. Speak on panels about topics relevant to women in science (develop your presentation skills).

  9. Write for your chapter’s newsletter or work on their website.

  10. Be visible as a role model to young girls, through science days, science fairs, and classroom visiting.
