AWIS CEO Transition: Meredith Gibson named Interim CEO

WASHINGTON DC, November 10, 2021 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS), the leading professional association dedicated to advancing women’s equitable participation in the sciences and in STEM, is promoting Meredith Gibson to the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2022.

Gibson has served as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer for seven years, leading AWIS’ operations and technology management and, more recently, assuming responsibility for membership, scholarships and partnerships.  She joined the AWIS staff in 2008 and, during her tenure at AWIS, has managed the Association’s grants and foundations programs. “I’m thrilled and honored to take the leadership role of AWIS as we celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary. We have refreshed our strategy for supporting our most valued asset – our members – and I look forward to building on our past successes in promoting women’s full participation in the scientific workforce.” said Gibson.

Gibson succeeds Sandy Robert, CAE, who will be leaving AWIS at the end of this year after three years as CEO to become Executive Director of ASM International, the world’s largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists. Robert was hired in early 2019 to re-envision the Association’s business model, and to refresh its strategic priorities.  “We have accomplished so much in three years, including redesigning our member value proposition, significantly increasing our monthly web traffic through digital marketing, and more than doubling our annual fundraising,” said Robert.  “Meredith brings tremendous skill and experience to lead AWIS as we enter the next phase of our operations.”

“Part of the AWIS mission is to support pathways for women into leadership roles. The AWIS Board and I are committed to creating these opportunities within AWIS as well as in the broader society,” said Board Chair Susan R. Windham-Bannister, PhD.  “Meredith’s expertise, tenure with AWIS, and her comprehensive understanding of the organization will make this a smooth transition and bring continuity to the next phase of our work.”
