AWIS CHAPTERS AND AFFILIATES RECEIVE STAR AWARDS FOR ADVANCING WOMEN IN STEM

Washington, DC, April 10, 2018 – The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is announcing the recipients of its 2018 STAR Chapters and Affiliates Award. Thirty AWIS chapters and affiliates from coast- to-coast will receive the STAR Award for demonstrating strong leadership and well-organized programs to advance women in STEM in all employment sectors.

“AWIS research shows that gender and racial gaps remain preventing women in all disciplines of STEM from achieving long term success,” said Janet Bandows Koster, AWIS Executive Director and CEO. “In cities across the country, our AWIS chapters and affiliates are truly making a difference for women in STEM fields and are deserving of the STAR Award. I am proud to recognize their efforts to advocate and drive positive change in STEM workplaces around the country.”

AWIS is the leading global network advocating for women in STEM. The AWIS STAR Chapters and Affiliate Award honors those groups that have accomplished key objectives outlined in the association’s Strategic Plan. The award encourages groups to perform specific activities designed to ensure that women in STEM fields can achieve their full potential.

“The Association for Women in Science is the extended network that supports our work. Receiving the STAR Award from AWIS installs a level of confidence and high regard for the work that the chapters and affiliates do on the ground,” said Isabel Escobar, PhD, Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Kentucky, and Chair of AWIS Chapters and Affiliates Committee. Escobar is President of the AWIS Kentucky Affiliate.

Groups that successfully accomplish 12 of the goals outlined by the AWIS National Governing Board and the Chapters and Affiliates Committee during the fiscal year are honored with the annual AWIS STAR Chapters and Affiliate Award.
