The Association for Women in Science Names Maria Ibañez Chief, Marketing & Communications

WASHINGTON DC, March 6, 2018 – Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Executive Director and CEO Janet Bandows Koster, announced Maria Ibañez as the organization’s Chief, Marketing and Communications Officer.
At AWIS, a global network of more than 100,000 professionals in STEM, Ibañez will direct and oversee tactical communications to advance women across all disciplines of STEM through research, advocacy, leadership development and strategic partnerships.

“We are pleased to have Maria join the AWIS team and provide her expertise as we continue to boldly champion the interests of women in STEM across all disciplines and sectors,” said AWIS CEO, Janet Bandows Koster.

Ibañez comes from the private and public sector with more than 20 years in the communications industry which includes a portfolio developing campaigns, brand identity, awareness building, and community engagement strategies that center on public policy. Her work includes leading public relations and communications efforts for issues related to children and families, women’s rights, education, homeownership, community development, family reunification, immigration, and health. Prior to joining AWIS, she was a Vice President of Communications at Comunicad, a national multicultural public relations firm for Fortune 500 companies.

Among her professional experience, Ibañez also held positions at the National Academy for State Health Policy, Office of the State Superintendent of Education for the District of Columbia, National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and NPR. She also served as a presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Treasury during the Clinton Administration. Ibañez holds an MA in Public Communications from The American University and a BA from the University of the District of Columbia. She was also an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, School of Journalism, and Trinity University’s School of Communications. Maria is also a certified master gardener.
