“I believe my scientific background, education, and experiences with AWIS have provided a solid analytical foundation that has served me well throughout my career, but more importantly, it has given me a sense of confidence and accomplishment.”
How would you describe your job?
In my early professional career, I would describe it as totally unexpected and unplanned. It was a time when I was curious and a bit of a risk taker. These attributes took me from being a pure academician to my current role that is predominately commercial/business nature. I believe my scientific background, education, and experiences with AWIS have provided a solid analytical foundation that has served me well throughout my career, but more importantly, it has given me a sense of confidence and accomplishment.
How did you end up transitioning from science/pharmacology into the commercial/business fields?
There wasn’t a grand master plan, but rather an openness to experience, learn, and sometimes fall on my face. I was lucky to have several strong mentors to provide guidance and insight. My postdoctoral advisor opened my eyes to non-traditional scientific careers. My curiosity and risk profile aligned well with a biotech start-up environment and that is where I landed first. Wanting more operational experience, I moved to Fisher Scientific, initially in marketing. After three months, I found myself in my first sales role, incredibly as Vice President. I was met with significant skepticism from my peers and it took a good two years before I was hitting on all cylinders. At about the time when I began to feel comfortable in the role, I knew it was time to try something new. In 2009 I made the change to my current role where I look after our corporatewide relationship with some of my company’s largest clients, and establish high impact programs, including scientific collaborations.
What else interests you?
At this time in my life, it is all about family. I have two daughters who are nothing short of remarkable. It is a constant juggling act of work and family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thankfully, my family has been flexible and supportive of my career and the tools AWIS provides on work-life balance have helped me navigate that stability.
