“AWIS is crucial for helping all women in STEM achieve our career goals and for advancing our equal participation, recognition, and compensation.”

As the only national organization advocating at the nexus of STEM and gender, AWIS has been a champion for women in STEM for
forty-five years. How do you believe AWIS has been most effective in advocating for women in STEM?

AWIS has embraced advocacy through its participation in public policy activities, influencing decisions and legislation that impact women in STEM fields. In addition, AWIS has constituted numerous awards and programs, as well as partnerships with other organizations and science societies, fostering further support for its members.

What do you aspire to accomplish in your career and why?

In my career, I’ve aspired to continue leading research projects and teams focusing on the development of innovative vegetable products through molecular breeding, such as cucurbit and leafy crops with disease resistance and improved fruit quality.

How has AWIS helped you professionally and/or personally?

The local AWIS chapters, where members build support networks that help them grow and develop, are, to my mind, the cornerstone of advocacy. AWIS’s efforts to promote our career goals, and to advance our mission of equal participation, recognition, and compensation for all women in STEM, are crucial. It is, therefore, up to all of us as members of local AWIS chapters to support and empower each other during our everyday interactions.
